Ever notice that one house in your neighborhood that seems to celebrate the arrival of spring with their annual sewer repair job? Their yard gets all dug up, the sewer line gets repaired, the landscaping gets redone, then the whole process is repeated the next year! Blame their plumbing service company—they probably told the homeowners that excavation was the only answer and quoted them a hefty price. A few days later… all that beautiful landscaping was toast.
However, in the past few years, newer, less invasive sewer repair and replacement alternatives have emerged. Trenchless methods require minimal landscaping damage, so if you decide you need sewer replacement this spring, make sure you call Feehan Plumbing and explore all your options.
Here are a couple of our more popular trenchless sewer replacement methods:
- Pipe Bursting: Don’t let the word ‘bursting’ fool you, this method requires minimal destruction to your property. With pipe bursting, a new pipe is laid in the exact space where the old pipe currently lies. The new pipe is fed into the old pipe from one end, and as it feeds through it expands and ‘bursts’ the old pipe. This method is great because it requires almost no digging. In most cases, only two holes need to be dug: one near the street, where it will connect to the main, and another closer to your house, where it will connect to the pipe leaving your home.
- Epoxy Lining: Using epoxy based coating or cured in place pipe (CIPP) lining can eliminate the need for expensive, intrusive digging. How does it work? Epoxy/CIPP coated fiberglass sleeve is lowered into the hole until it reaches the damage site. It is then inserted into the broken pipe where it is inflates to fill the damaged area and ultimately form a new section of piping. This process typically only requires the digging of one hole and can often be used to repair an entire section of sewer line.
