Four types of faucets and reasons they leak
If you are thinking of having your kitchen faucet replaced, either because you’re remodeling this area of your home or your old faucet simply isn’t working properly, you may be surprised at the variety of styles to choose from.
- A ball faucet is easily identifiable because it only has one handle. The body of the faucet has metal or plastic balls that control the flow of hot and cold water. This type of faucet doesn’t have washers, but it still has several parts that make them more susceptible to leaks than other washerless faucets.
- Disc faucets also have single handles. In this style, however, the handle sits over a cylinder that houses two ceramic discs. These discs slide over each other to control temperature and water flow. If the discs wear out, this will lead to a leak.
- Cartridge faucets regulate water volume by moving up and down, and control temperature by moving from side to side. You will need to have worn cartridges replaced if this type of faucet forms a leak.
- A compression faucet has a separate handle for hot and cold water. This is the least expensive type of faucet, but it is also the most vulnerable to leaking.
