When Is It Time For a Sewer Replacement in Chester County?

|

Replacing your sewer is a major decision, but sometimes there isn’t any option left and you need to replace the plumbing lines. But how do you know that you really need to replace the line and don’t simply need a cleaning performed?
Here are a few signs that it might be time for a sewer replacement:

  1. Your pipes make a gurgling sound: A well-running sewer shouldn’t make any noises when you flush the toilet beyond the common whooshing sound of water running into the pipes. If you hear gurgling, that means there’s air in the pipes.
  2. Your home was built in the 1970s or earlier: Sewer pipes degrade with age and in areas with high mineral content in the water. Keep an eye on your older pipes—PVC has a useful life of 25 to 40 years, for example—and be aware that the older the pipe the more likely it needs replacing.
  3. Your water drains slower than normal: If water empties slowly from your toilet, it might be time for a sewer replacement. This could be the sign of a clog, or mean that a foreign object is blocking the water from draining, or that your sewer system is showing its age.
  4. A wet sinkhole appears in your yard: If your sewer pipes burst, chances are you’ll see a big wet sinkhole appear in the yard. This is one of the most visible signs you need a sewer replacement. This can happen because your pipes backed-up and burst due to increased pressure, from a tree root breaking into the pipe, or even from vandalism.
