A dark stain probably indicates a roof leak
There are many potential causes of a ceiling leak. It could be due to a pipe that has burst, some sort of damage in the main drain, or a defective bathroom shower seal drain. Or, the problem may not be plumbing-related at all, but rather due to your roof having an issue.
It is very important that you have a plumber come to your home and perform an inspection if you ever see any sort of stain on your ceiling. This could be an indication that a leak has formed, and this leak could eventually cause substantial damage to the structure of your home. Your drywall may be at risk, and you may also be at risk of health hazards due to the formation of mold and mildew.
If you have a roof leak, the stain will probably be dark in the center surrounded by several rings. As those rings move outward, they will appear to be lighter and lighter. If the center is dark with many rings surrounding it, that likely means your roof has had a leak for a long time. On the other hand, if you see several smaller stains on your ceiling near an exterior wall, then you probably have a leak that is due to a plumbing issue.
