How to Avoid Pipe Leaks in Montgomery County

|

Montgomery County residents know that when their home plumbing system springs a leak, it’s time to call Feehan Plumbing & Heating. Although many pipe leaks are preventable, this is often easier said than done because the warning signs are not obvious enough to demand our attention. Let’s take a look at some of those signs and how being vigilant in your home can help protect yourself from property damage due to water leaks.

  • To prevent a leaky roof, frequently clean debris from your roof, clear your gutters, and repair any damage to the roof.
  • Double-check your downspouts. Make sure that they are pointed away from your home’s foundation.
  • Check around and under all appliances, especially the dishwasher and refrigerator, for signs of leaking water.
  • Replace washing machine hoses often. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 3 to 5 years to prevent them from wearing thin and leaking.
  • Keep an eye out for rust and corrosion on your water heater. This condition compromises the integrity of the tank and is often the source of the leak. Make sure your water heater has a pan and drain under it so if a hidden leak does pop up, it has nowhere to accumulate. Most water heaters last 8 to 12 years, so if yours is around that age, you should get it checked to make sure it is still functioning as intended.
  • Monitor plumbing fixtures for signs of leaks. Check sink, ice machine, and dishwasher water lines for leaks and other damage or deterioration.
  • Remove garden hoses and turn off the water to exterior taps in the winter. If there is no exterior cut-off valve, insulate the tap.

DIY leak prevention is far from an exact science, but simply being aware of common leak sites and fixes can make a world of difference when your pipes do fail you. So take a look around your home and if you don’t like what you see—call Feehan Plumbing & Heating, your leak prevention and detection experts!
