Radiator Problems

Banging noises – If you have had a home radiator for any period of time, you have more than likely heard the ghost-like sounds of banging and knocking. That is air that is trapped in the system that rises to the top and robs it of efficiency. We can come out an install a bleed valve in the top of the radiator to bleed excess air out of the system. This “system bleed” should take place twice a year, and radiators located on upper floors of houses should be bled more often because they accumulate air more rapidly. But banging can also be the result of radiators that are improperly set up, as the pipes are expanding and contracting from temperature changes and banging on surrounding surfaces. We can install heat-reflective paneling between the radiator and the exterior wall of the house to improve the efficiency of the system.

Cold radiator – This is typically caused because of the build up of sludge throughout the system. This sludge is black iron oxide, and occurs due to corrosion of the inside of the pipes and radiators, and results in poor water circulation. We can clean that sludge with a special chemical, then drain and refill the system.
